This does not mean your child is overweight or underweight. The CDC recommends using a BMI-for-age calculation in children and teens between 2 and 20 years of age. A value greater than 50 percent means a child is above average. A value below 50 percent means a child weighs less than the average. For example out of a sample of 100 children, a percentile value of 40 percent means your child weighs more than 40 children and weighs less than the other 60.Ī percentile of 50% represents the average or mean weight. The percentile tells you what percentage of children weigh less than your child. The weight status calculation for children and teenagers is based on the BMI-for-age charts developed by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 2000). It will tell you if a child is underweight, at an ideal weight, at risk of being. Children and teen’s BMI need to be age and sex-specific because the amount of body fat changes with age and the amount of body fat differs between girls and boys. The percentile shows how your child's weight compares to other children. This calculator gives an approximate BMI for children from ages 5 to 18. BMI is interpreted differently for children and teens, even though it is calculated using the same formula as adult BMI. This calculator provides your child's weight percentile based on age.
